Dear Inquirer,

San Diego City Councilmember Raul Campillo here: happy Friday!

Welcome to this week's Raul Roundup, your go-to source for the latest news, updates, and insights from our community and City Hall. Here’s what’s been going on this week:

San Diego’s $60 surge parking for special events is higher than the cost of a ticket (FOX 5)

This week, I took to FOX 5 to make the case that our special event parking regulations do not make sense. After all, how possibly could it be sensible to charge more to actually pay the parking fee than to just pay the ticket? We should remedy this program, which is hurting downtown businesses and residents, and put a pause on it until we can find a good solution.

E-Bike Safety PSA

E-bikes are growing in popularity across San Diego, but so are injuries and safety concerns. That’s why local law enforcement and doctors are teaming up to educate families on how to ride safely—and on the difference between legal e-bikes and high-powered electric motorcycles, which are not street legal.

Here are a few key reminders:

  • Ride in bike lanes, roads, or designated bike paths—not on sidewalks.
  • Always ride with traffic and obey all stop signs and signals.
  • Helmets are required for riders under 18 (and for all Class 3 e-bike riders).
  • Passengers only if the bike is designed for them.
  • Do not modify an e-bike to go faster than its class allows.

E-motorcycles, unlike e-bikes, cannot be registered for street use and are only legal in designated off-highway vehicle areas (none exist in the City of San Diego).

Moment of Kindness: Lonely, socially anxious people see particular benefit from performing small acts of kindness (University of British Columbia)

Especially in a week with a lot of difficult emotions to process, it’s important to remember the value of being kind.

A new study out of the University of British Columbia shows that small, everyday acts of kindness can do more than brighten someone’s day—they can actually reduce loneliness, especially for people who are socially anxious or withdrawn.

Researchers found that simple gestures—like offering your bus seat, sending a kind text, or helping a neighbor—were especially powerful when directed toward “weak ties” like coworkers, neighbors, or acquaintances. These acts not only eased feelings of loneliness, they created more opportunities for meaningful social connection.

Kindness doesn’t need to be big or complicated. A small gesture can make your community feel a little warmer—and might just make you feel less alone too.

Thank You for Coming to Coffee with Campillo!

Another fantastic Coffee with Campillo in Linda Vista this past weekend! Thank you to the nearly 40 residents who showed up and asked thoughtful questions about our parks, roads, and more.

So proud to truly prioritize engaging and listening to District 7 residents — Saturday’s coffee marks the 7th town hall that we’ve held in 2025 alone. Stay tuned for more details on the next one!
